Bayou Chene

We are going to have a section called Bayou Chene since our roots are there. Some of you may have memories about being there but I personally have never been there. Any thing anyone has to say will be of great interest.

Here are a few Carline entries...

Yesterday I received some material from the Louisiana Methodist Archives about the Methodist Church at Bayou Chene. I did see a few Senecas and Verretts but no one I could definitely say was our family. It is all hand written so I'm going to organize and type the information. I will post the information here in case some could pertain to another branch of someone's family. Dolly

You do know that the Joseph Carline Plantation on the Chene was never for the father, he died in 1809, 40 years before that list (of people who live on the Chene from 1798 - 1927)and I have never found any record that he went to the Chene. I think the first Carlins on the Chene were Joseph's grandchildren - the children of Dennis - his dtr married an Allen, a son married a Senetiere, etc. All the other early marriages were to families known in the early history of New Iberia and Franklin... Obviously one of the children had an undocumented son named Joseph, either as a middle name...or they named the place after their grandfather....

This is the information I have on Urbain, son of Denis, son of Joseph…He could have been the owner of ‘Joseph Carlin Plantation’ or his brother Godfrey….His brother Ursin’s plantation is already listed…
.................................
According to records of John Ira Carline - All their children were born on Urbain & Arise Carlin's plantation on Bayou Chene - on the south end of Old Bayou Chene, 300 acres, T10 s, R 9 E, Section 35. Bounded north by Bayou Chene, south by land of Godfrey Carline, east of Bayou Chene & West by Olevia Plantation.

Urbain and his older brother Ursin starting farming cane circa 1829 (as records indicate)They purchased part of the Olivier Plantation on the Chene. My Grandfather told me as a child that Urbain was so dark complected he was thought to be a Mulatto by a fellow applying for work there, and the rollers on his mill were made of Oak. they would squeal so loud during grinding season that the pitch of the noise would make all the dogs in the community howl in unison.I get a chuckle out of it when I envision that site.
